Emergency Management as a Career

I was recently asked if I would post some information assembled for the Arizona State University (ASU) online emergency management program for those who might want to know more about emergency management careers.  The infographic they sent provides a great snapshot of emergency management career opportunities.

From their outreach office: “When different agencies work together to manage a disaster, someone has to coordinate their activities to ensure things run smoothly.  This is where emergency management specialists are crucial.  From helping reduce vulnerability to hazards to helping communities manage disasters effectively.  Below is a look at emergency management as a career.” Information on their program can be found at https://asuonline.asu.edu/.

  1. To me this is very timely. What do you think of training like this, especially for people like me who are most interested in triage:

Obviously this would be necessary preparation for MCE work in hospitals, but would it be a sufficient qualification? Best wishes,

  2. Hi Tim,

I just found your blog a few weeks ago a and I’m very excited to read it! I am looking into four year colleges that offer a BS in Emergency Management. I’m having a hard time finding the “best” program and was wondering if you had any advice for narrowing it down. Right now my top choice is actually ASU they offer a BS in Emergency Managment and Homeland Security at their Phoenix campus. I got the list from FEMA’s website but was hoping you may have some insight on picking the best program. Thank you in advanced for any advice you may have.

    Best Wishes,

    Lucia

    1. Hi Lucia,
I have first-hand experience with American Military University (no requirement for military service to attend) through their Master’s program. I’ve heard good feedback from those who have completed their bachelor’s through here. The rates are competitive and their instructors have real-world experience in the field. There is a challenge, though, that I feel exists with any online program regardless of the school and that seems to be minimal instructor contact. There is plenty of reading and writing and interaction with peers, but little instruction from the person running the class. That said, there are many good opportunities to be had.

      Best of luck!

      Tim
